Support for international organisations

Extensive support is available for renovation or conversion projects that are funded, in whole or in part, by a Swiss Government loan. These include:

  • establishing a strategic and technical support structure for the project in conjunction with the Swiss authorities;
  • assistance in setting up a governance structure for the project;
  • assistance in developing a context-specific work management system;
  • advice on construction, standards and federal, cantonal and municipal regulations;
  • assistance with local procedures (building permits, energy compliance, etc.) ;
  • financial monitoring of the loan (administered by FIPOI), from project inception to implementation;
  • providing any other tailored assistance that may be needed.

 

Guide for international organisations

FIPOI is currently working on a guide for international organisations wishing to undertake a construction, conversion and/or renovation project.

It is primarily aimed at organisations wishing to apply for a loan from the Swiss authorities to finance all or part of their project.

Projects of international organisations

FIPOI has assisted numerous international organisations to develop and implement their construction and renovation projects.Some of these have already been completed or are well underway, while others are about to be launched.

At the end of 2020, Switzerland had granted loans to international organisations totalling about CHF 390 million for construction or renovation projects.  These loans are made available through FIPOI, which itself obtains funding from the Swiss authorities.

 

International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC)

Construction of the new IFRC building was completed in 2019. Switzerland provided a CHF 59 million loan for the project.

 

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

Renovation of the ICRC’s historic building (former Carlton Hotel) was completed in 2019. Switzerland provided a CHF 9 million loan for the project.

 

International Labour Organization (ILO)

Phase I of the renovation work on the ILO building, covering eleven floors of office space, was completed in 2020.Switzerland provided a CHF 70 million loan for the project.

 

United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG)

Construction of the new UNOG building (H building) was completed in 2021.Switzerland provided a CHF 125 million loan for the project.

Renovation of the Palais des Nations began in 2021, with work on the E Building scheduled to start in 2022. Switzerland provided a CHF 275 million loan for the project.

 

World Health Organization (WHO)

Construction of the new WHO building and related works will be completed in 2021.Switzerland provided a CHF 140 million loan for the project.

 

International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

Construction of the new ITU building is scheduled to begin in 2023.Switzerland is providing a CHF 150 million loan for the project.

 

International Organization for Migration (IOM)

The IOM plans to demolish its current building and build new headquarters on the same site.The project is currently under study.

 

Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail

OTIF is planning to renovate its headquarters in Bern.The project is currently under study.
